How was Honey and Machetes Born?

The Honey and Machetes is a dynamic duo composed of a physician, Dr. Shaila Day, and a clinical pharmacist, Dr. Jasmyn Kianna…better known as The 2 Medicine Women. We met while growing up in Decatur, Georgia, matriculating through Southwest DeKalb High School together. One of our favorite classes was Advanced Preparation Biology, where we enhanced our interest in both science and medicine. We both knew we wanted to be healers not only of ourselves but for our loved ones and the community at large as well. After graduating from high school, we pursued our respective careers in medicine. Over the years we began to fall in love with natural healing modalities and started to study indigenous medicinal practices.

We describe ourselves as “Dawtas of the Diaspora”, and we are extremely proud of our cultural backgrounds. Together we have become students of indigenous cultures and have traveled to over 70 countries and 6 continents studying the healing practices of a myriad of cultures.

We have had the honor to see and participate first hand in the indigenous practices of the Natives of the Central and North Americas, the indigenous peoples of North, West, East, and South Africa, the aboriginal people of the Polynesian Islands, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as ancient practices of Asia.  

As we both grew as individuals, we realized the Ancestral Mothers were calling for us to offer something much needed to our community. As women who have a mastery of Western medicine as well as a proficiency of natural healing systems, there is a unique offering we have that can help improve the overall health and wellness of the community. The dichotomy is unique and we can provide a rare perspective by pulling from a calabash full of traditional and modern medicinal options. As a potential Honeybee, you will learn to use your food as medicine to both prevent and treat dis-ease. You will learn techniques to decrease the toxin burden in your daily lives and begin to live the sweet Honey and Machetes life!
